Here at Swasthaveda, after our detailed consultation with you, we will discuss the best treatments for you which will then be customised for your needs. We offer a wide variety of traditional ayurvedic therapies to help improve your health and also to maintain the vitality in your life.

Here are some of the therapies we offer. For your convenience they have been grouped into different categories. Please explore and contact us if you need more information on any of these great ancient therapies.

Full Body Therapies (+)
  • Abhyanga : A signature traditional ayurvedic full body oil massage.

    A relaxing full body massage, using medicated herbal oils. The oils are selected by us to specifically match your body type. This treatment improves both arterial and lymphatic circulation, stimulating the immune system, detoxifying, strengthening and revitalising your entire body. It improves the complexion of the skin and by removing fatigue in the body it invigorates and rejuvenates you. If done daily, as part of a wellness regime, abhyanga helps relieve fatigue, delays aging, gives clarity to vision, builds up the body, ensures good sleep and improves the colour, strength and texture of the skin.

    A full body steam treatment (svedana) usually follows the abhyanga.

  • Udvartana : A traditional ayurvedic massage using warm dry herbal powders instead of oil.

    The herbal powder is rubbed all over your body with vigorous movements allowing the skin and tissue under your skin to release their toxins efficiently. This powder will also exfoliate your body while stimulating the lymphatic system. The heat created during this procedure will help cleanse the body and promote the breakdown of fatty deposits. Udvartana detoxifies and nourishes the body tissue, helping with slimming and reshaping your body. It is a great therapy for obesity and reducing cellulite. In addition, it strengthens the muscles, makes the skin soft and gives it a vivacious glow.

  • Njavarakizhi : A deeply invigorating massage using small cotton bags filled with a special type of cooked rice.

    Your whole body or any specific part of your body is massaged with poultices filled with njavara rice (a highly vitamin enriched rice from Kerala). This rice is cooked in milk and herbal decoctions. This warm rice induces your skin to sweat opening the pores allowing elimination of toxins and absorption of rice and milk decoctions. It is highly rejuvenating, nourishing and prepares you to bear the stress and strain of busy life. Also it tonifies the nerves, strengthens the nervous system and improves the condition of the skin. Njavarakizhi is used in the management of neurological disorders, muscle wasting, degenerative diseases, bone breakages, and in children to increase their bodily mass

  • Pizhichil/ Kaya Seka : A traditional Ayurvedic treatment involving pouring warm medicated oil over the whole body.

    Your body is made to perspire by means of gently pouring warm medicated oil over it in a specific manner. As the warm oil spreads over your body a gentle slow massage is given. This beautiful therapy is especially effective in the treatment of joint disorders, disorders of the nervous system, diseases of the bones and muscle, sexual weakness and for rejuvenation. It improves skin complexion, delays aging, increases immunity and prolongs life span.

  • Svedan : This treatment helps your body perspire.

    This treatment helps your body perspire, resulting in the unblocking of pores and hence eliminating toxins through these open pores. As a result of this, it helps in reducing the excessive adipose tissue and improves blood and lymphatic circulation and revitalises your body. It is usually done after an oil massage (Abhyanga) allowing the deep penetration of the oil into the skin. It reduces stiffness, relaxes the mind and body, promotes all over well-being. It is one of the signature Ayurvedic treatments for slimming.

  • Pinda Sweda : A detoxifying and rejuvenating massage using small cotton bags filled with herbal powders.

    A rejuvenating, strengthening, nourishing and detoxifying massage using cotton poultice bags filled with specially selected herbs, which are dipped in warm herbal oils and then massaged over your body. This warmth induces your skin to sweat and allows the herbs to penetrate deep into your body. Pinda sweda improves circulation, loosens toxins, reduces water retention, swelling and excess fat. In addition to this it stimulates lymphatic drainage. It is great for muscle and joint pains, arthritis, rheumatic conditions, stiffness, sports injuries and general tension. Due to the gentle penetration of warmth into your body, it also makes this a very relaxing and soothing experience thus reducing stress. (Pinda sweda can also be done over a local area of your body)

Local Therapies (+)

Local Basti : Basti is a Sanskrit word which means to hold.

These are unique treatments where medicated oils are retained over certain parts of your body for a prescribed period of time. During this time the herbs are efficiently absorbed into the muscles through open skin pores. Not only does it relieve symptoms but also it leaves the areas feeling revitalised and nourished.

  • Shiro Basti : Warm medicated oil is retained on the head for a specific period of time.

    A cap with an open end is secured on your head (similar to an open ended chef’s hat). Then warm medicated oil is gently poured into this cap and allowed to soak into the scalp. It is useful in neurological conditions and degenerative conditions of the brain, spinal chord, eyes, ears and nose.

  • Janu Basti : Warm medicated oil is retained over the knee for a specific period of time.

    This therapy improves blood circulation around the knee area , promoting the strength of the knee joint, relieving pain and stiffness. This is a great treatment for in arthritic conditions of the knee.

  • Greeva Basti : Warm medicated oil is retained over the neck for a specific period of time.

    Improving blood supply to this area and lubricating this area, it is helpful for people suffering from chronic neck pains, cervical spondylosis, nerve problems, degeneration, compression fractures and upper back/neck stress and tension.

  • Uru Basti : Warm medicated oil is retained over the chest for a specific period of time.

    Urubasti helps in respiratory and bronchial diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, chesty coughs and vocal problems.

  • Hrud Basti : Warm medicated oil is retained over the heart for a specific period of time.

    This gentle soothing treatment is deeply calming and relaxing which helps relieve nervousness, anxiety and fear. It will stabilise your mind and emotions. It can also help with ailments such as high blood pressure, palpitations and various heart conditions.

  • Kati Basti : Warm medicated oil is retained over the lower back for a specific period of time.

    The deep fomentation of the oil radiates through your muscles releasing tension and stiffness in your lower back area. By improving circulation to the pelvis and lower limbs, it is a great therapy for helping in the relief of all lower back ailments including acute and chronic pain, disc problems, lumbar spondylosis, nerve disorders, sciatica, osteoporosis and muscular spasms. The nourishing properties of the oil also imparts strength to the lumbar area.

  • Netra Basti/Netra Tarpana : Warm medicated ghee is retained over the eyes for a specific period of time.

    It is one of the most effective treatments for your eyes. Revitalising and nourishing the eyes, it is both a preventative procedure to maintain the health of the eyes and also a great treatment for a wide range of ophthalmic conditions including eyestrain, tired eyes and dry eyes. This therapy will have a cooling and refreshing effect on irritated and burning eyes. It helps, sooth the eyes, reduce dark circles and wrinkles and improves the glow and lustre of the eyes.

Local Abhyanga :

Just like the full body abhyanga, these are oil massages. However, the massage is only done over certain parts of the body based on your symptoms. Please note a course of five to ten sessions is advised to provide maximum relief to you.

  • Kati Abhyanga : This is an extremely effective and deeply enriching oil massage of the back.

    The focus is placed specifically on the area that is problematic for you. It helps give relief in chronic and acute backaches, arthritis, prolapsed disc, spinal disorders, osteoporosis, sciatica and stiffness and muscle spasms in the back area.

  • Pada Abhyanga : This highly relaxing ayurvedic foot massage.

    It is a stimulating and soothing massage of your legs, feet and ankle. This massage revitalises the weight bearing part of your body. People whose jobs entail a lot of standing will find a leg and food massage especially useful. It prevents dryness, cracking and numbness of the feet. It helps to reduce muscle tension, swelling, aches and spasms. In cases of sprained ankle ligaments and fractures, it helps in their recovery. Pada abhyanga is also very effective in the treatment of swelling due to diabetes, heart conditions and fluid retention. In addition, this treatment benefits the entire body as it stimulates the nerves from the body’s organs, which are located on the feet.

  • Marma Abhyanga : An energising massage of the Marma points in the body.

    Marmas are energy points in the body which when stimulated improve the circulation of blood and this stimulation also stabilises the nervous system giving you calmness, and vitality.

Local Dhara : Oil is poured in a slow, steady stream on the affected part of the body.

It is useful in degenerative conditions of the muscles and joints.

Head and Face Therapies (+)
  • Shirodhara : This ultimate relaxation therapy is one of the signature therapies of Ayurveda.

    A continuous stream of medicated oils, milk or concoctions is poured in a rhythmical fashion over your forehead. It is deeply grounding and relaxing for the mind, nervous system and body and will enhance the feeling of well-being. It is useful in alleviating stress, headaches, depression, mental tension, anxiety, insomnia, balancing hormones, balancing blood pressure and improving memory and concentration. In addition to its many benefits is also very useful in diseases of the nervous system. Its nourishing and rejuvenating actions slow the aging process and strengthens you physically, mentally and emotionally.

  • Shiro Abhyanga : An ayurvedic head, neck and shoulder massage.

    A very relaxing and calming treatment using medicated oils, which nourish your head and revitalise your hair and hair roots. It is great for headaches, migraines, tightness of neck and shoulder, stress, insomnia and by improving circulation in the upper part of the body it leaves you relaxed, revitalised and re-energised.

  • Mukha Abhyanga : An ayurvedic face massage.

    It is great for relaxing and toning your face muscles. By stimulating the microcirculation and the lymph flow, the wrinkles are kept away and there is promotion of healthy, younger looking skin.

  • Mukha Lepam : Application of Ayurvedic face packs

    A soothing and relaxing treatment, where powdered herbs are mixed with rose water, made into a paste and applied over your face. As well as improving your skin complexion it is an effective treatment in certain skin conditions such as acne.

  • Karna Purana : A nourishing treatment for the ears.

    A gentle ear massage is followed with warm medicated oil being poured into the ear canal. Once the cavity of the ear is completely filled with the oil, you relax for 5 minutes until the oil is completely absorbed. This is a great treatment for conditions such as tinnitus, earache, excess earwax, neck and jaw pain, impaired hearing, dryness and itching in the ears and vertigo. As well as clearing the ear channels it also has the added benefit of nourishing the auditory structures.

  • Gandusha / Kavala : An ancient Ayurvedic treatment for oral conditions.

    Here a medicated decoction/oil is gargled and held in your mouth for a prescribed period of time. It helps give relief from oral conditions and it strengthens your teeth and gums. (This is similar to what is described in modern medicine as oil pulling).

Panchakarma (+)

Panchakarma is the famous group of ancient Ayurvedic detoxification treatments. They have been carried out for centuries giving millions of people relief in a wide range of conditions. These therapies can also be done as part of a wellness programme to maintain health and prevent disease.

Please note these cannot be booked without a full consultation with our practitioners. They are intense therapies and we require you to be prepared well for them. Done correctly, they have a deep cleansing effect on the mind, body and emotions.

  • Nasya : A traditional Ayurvedic detoxifying treatment for ailments of the head and neck.

    A gentle face massage is followed by a light steam therapy. This is followed by the application of a small amount of warm oil into your nostrils. A wonderful treatment, which is highly effective in improving breathing, sleep ailments, relieving headaches and stiffness in the neck jaw and throat areas. It helps in relieving sinusitis, reducing frequency and intensity of migraines. Nasya is one of the most important Ayurvedic therapies in many neurological conditions. It rejuvenates and cleanses the sense organs and improves memory and concentration.

  • Basti : A traditional Ayurvedic detoxifying treatment for ailments related to VATA DOSHA in the body.

    Here a gentle massage around the waist and lumbar area is followed by a light steam therapy. An enema is then given using medicated decoctions/oils/ghee based on the condition being treated. It is said in Ayurvedic texts that Basti is the best treatment for any bodily condition as its action helps to remove deep seated toxins in the body. Not only does it cleanse the body it has additional nourishing and rejuvenating benefits thus creating a deep mental, physical and emotion transformation in you. A course of basti is recommended for maximum results.

  • Virechana : A traditional Ayurvedic detoxifying treatment for ailments related to PITTA DOSHA in the body.

    Approximately a three-week therapy involving dietary changes, internal herbs and external treatments. Starting with herbs to improve your digestion and remove the toxins, internal and external oleation is then given using oil and ghee. Once the body is ready, herbs are taken to give a purgative effect on the body. This is for one day only and it is then followed by a week of strict diet and lifestyle changes.

    After this wonderful detoxification, not only will your symptoms reduce massively, but your body will feel light, strong and nourished. In addition your skin will glow and eyes will look lustrous.
